چکیده

The nomenclature used here (see also Fig. S1) was built on classical dental serial homologies. The work of Hershkovitz [2] was a major source for defining homologous structures and naming them, but other sources were also considered [3-7]. These works emphasized dental structures that are expressed as relief on tooth crowns. Structures expressed as depressions, in particular groove systems, were also demonstrated to be important features of tooth morphology (see notably Hünermann’s and Orliac’s works on suoids [8-10]). Grooves are often more resistant to wear than salient structures, and the presence of grooves is not dependent on that of crests (and vice versa). Therefore, both systems (reliefand depression-based) are viewed here as fully complementary and were integrated in the proposed nomenclature. On this ground, two steps were necessary to establish a congruent terminology: 1) naming and defining the common structures appearing on all tooth crowns; 2) naming and defining particular cusps/-ids and their elements. Tooth orientation terminology used in this work (Fig. S1) follows recommendations formulated by Smith & Dodson [11].

Turnover Rates of Intermediate Sulfur Species (Sx2-, S0, S2O32-, S4O62-, SO32-) in Anoxic Freshwater and Sediments

The microbial reduction of sulfate to sulfide coupled to organic matter oxidation followed by the transformation of sulfide back to sulfate drives a dynamic sulfur cycle in a variety of environments. The oxidative part of the sulfur cycle in particular is difficult to constrain because the eight electron oxidation of sulfide to sulfate occurs stepwise via a suite of biological and chemical path...

Text S2 TEXT S2: MATERIALS AND METHODS Gould suggested that Morton, influenced by racial bias, might have mismeasured the capacity of skulls when using seeds [1]. While Morton’s measurements of cranial capacity reported in 1839 were done by filling crania with seed (via a method he described in extreme detail [2]), he soon became dissatisfied with the repeatability of this method: “there is suf...

An unmodified wobble uridine in tRNAs specific for Glutamine, Lysine, and Glutamic acid from Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium results in nonviability—Due to increased missense errors?

In the wobble position of tRNAs specific for Gln, Lys, and Glu a universally conserved 5-methylene-2-thiouridine derivative (xm5s2U34, x denotes any of several chemical substituents and 34 denotes the wobble position) is present, which is 5-(carboxy)methylaminomethyl-2-thiouridine ((c)mnm5s2U34) in Bacteria and 5-methylcarboxymethyl-2-thiouridine (mcm5s2U34) in Eukarya. Here we show that mutant...
